Jane

For 4 months, I rode my morning bus to work with the same three people, and for 4 months, we never said a word to each other, a smile on the way home, maybe a look of “what was that?” But never a word, so, in order to differentiate them in my mind, I named my bus-mates: Joe, Jack, and Jane.
And one day, 4 months later, Jane was not there, naturally you think she took a day off. But her absence extended to a week, so I naturally though, vacation.
Two Weeks: long vacation
A month: you begin to wonder.

Jane was a middle eaged lady, she had a kind face and always wore a long black Ecuadorian shawl and a hat that almost looked like a Beret. Whatever happened to Jane? Did she quit? Did she have to relocate to take care of her dying mother? Did she fall off a flight of stairs and is now laying in a hospital bed in a coma? Why do I even care? Why do I think about her every morning?
Human beings are mysterious creatures, we are as close to a life from another world as we will ever get, where silence, complete and utter silence, can be the strongest of our forms of communication.

Goodbye, my friend.
