... but why?

Americans have a puzzling distaste for any government-run socialized programs. I suspect that comes from the inability to distinguish between socialized programs and communism, a bias that arose during the Cold War. However, I think Americans are throwing the baby (socialization) out with the bathwater (communism). What's so inherently bad with socialized programs?
